For as long as I’ve been playing Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, I’ve seen other plays chatting about ‘cooked grenades’, but I never knew what they were talking about. I finally decided to do a little research on the topic, and now I can cook my own grenades, too. Everyone should learn how to do this, because it can really help you out in the game, especially online.
How do you cook a grenade?
Grenade cooking is done simply by pressing the grenade throwing button (on my keyboard, that’s the G key) and holding it down for an extended period of time, then throwing the grenade right before it goes off. You can also play suicide bomber and just hold the thing until it goes off. In the game, there’s actually three Master Chef challenges that require you to use cooked grenades.
Why would you want to cook a grenade?
The purpose behind grenade cooking is to give your opponent less time to react to the grenade. In Call of Duty 4, you can hear a little metallic clink-clink sound when a grenade hits the ground near you. Normally, this means you have less than two seconds to get out of the way. Most of the time you can’t get out of the way. In the game, you can also pick up an enemy’s grenade and throw it back at them. There are three Hot Potato challenges in the game that require you to toss back grenades.
By learning how to cook the grenade at just the right amount of time, you can make it go off on impact. This means your opponent won’t ever have a chance to react or get out of the way. You could also cook it just long enough for them to try and throw it back, but instead it would go off in their hand as soon as they picked it up. It could be used to take out enemies hiding in hard to reach places, where normally a grenade would bounce away if thrown toward them.
Is grenade cooking considered cheating?
Not at all. As mentioned before, it’s required for three challenges in the game. It isn’t frowned upon like people who use the Martrydom perk, which lets you drop a live grenade after you’ve been killed. Grenade cooking is simply a strategic way to get the most out of your grenades. If you look back at movies where characters have used hand grenades, you’ll see a lot of them where somebody pulls the pin and then waits extra long before tossing it. The hardest part of it all is just learning the right amount of time before you need to throw it, otherwise the grenade will blow up in your face.
